Real Men Don't Blog
It amazes me, sometimes, what gets attention in the Blog world. Some guy wrote a Savage-esque post railing against the 'feminization' of men and calling for an end to it, which added a little fuel to this whole 'Metrosexual' (another dumb concept) debate that has been floating around recently.
There is nothing new to this. It's classic counter-culture anger which happens whenever an ideal of something get slightly re-defined. The amusing thing is that this 'Real Man' vs 'Sensitive Man' has played out before, and will probably keep doing so for ever. The concept of the 'Ideal' man always seems to float between 'Masculine' male and 'Sensitive' male. And, when reality seems to spends too long in one direction, people start wishing it was more towards the other. The ultimate idealized man, which will never be met, is probably the blending of both. I would think women would prefer the muscular guy who can rip apart a car engine in 10 minutes, chop down a tree, but also clean up after himself and find fulfillment in something other than football. But I digress.
Some people see this rant as a philosophical underpinning of conservative thought, but that's silly. It's a grossly exaggerated sliver of conservative philosophy, but so horribly distorted it's nonsensical, not unlike like the 'mission accomplished' sign explanations.
So, this guy is a yahoo, as evident by such observations:
Speaking of rap music, do you want to know why more White boys buy that crap than Black boys do? You know why rape is such a problem on college campuses? Why binge drinking is a problem among college freshmen?
It's a reaction: a reaction against being pussified. And I understand it, completely. Young males are aggressive, they do fight amongst themselves, they are destructive, and all this does happen for a purpose.
Because only the strong men propagate.
Yes, Rape, Binge Drinking, Violence all serves the purpose of allowing strong men to propagate.
So, it's hard for me to take this as a serious statement of concern over the feminization of men. It's a emotional rant that is so over the top it's not even marginally believable.
