Against God
Actually, if I couldn't see this for what it is, I'd be for it. What is it? A groups is working on an initiative in CA to include the study of the King James Bible as part of the school curriculum. Or so they would have you believe. Actually, it's a clever attempt to get around the 'Church State' thing, as they are promoting the idea as the study of the bible as literature. They don't put it that plainly, but that's what they're pretend that they're trying to do. From the initiative
Whereas the Authorized or King James Bible of 1611, was one of the supreme achievements of the English Renaissance, and is rightly regarded as one of the most influential books in the history of English civilization
And I would be fore that. I think the bible would be a fascinating book to have studied in school (By older kids. Too much murder, sex, prostitution, incest, and boils for the younger crowd). It has had a powerful effect on the development of the world, and it is also a gripping piece of fiction.
However, further (Of the initiative, not the bible) reading reveals what it is, in fact, is an attempt to get the CA taxpayers to foot the bill for the distribution of bibles to all school kids.( Those godly people are very slippery). First of all, they're not offering any actual curriculum - the initiative just says that the bibles should be handed out and the study is 'voluntary'.
...the People therefore direct that the King James Bible, without apocrypha, conformable in spelling, capitalization, and typeface to modern text, and including the translators' preface to King James, the translators' introductory remarks to the reader, a standard concordance, a glossary defining only archaic words and pronouns, and without commentary, footnotes, or margin notes, is to be provided henceforth as a textbook for grades one through twelve to be furnished without cost to each of those pupils whose parents do not opt-out by specific objection. The reading and study of the book shall be voluntary.
See, they know if it were actually part of the curriculum, it would be treated as fiction, not 'truth'. So, they just want them handed out - which would be a waste. Kids who wanted to read it, will most likely have one. The other kids will just toss them. Also, what other great books of fiction do we just hand out? It's been a while since I was in high school, but generally aren't textbooks are given out, and then re-collected at the end of the quarter.
Anyway, seeing as this is CA, I doubt very much that it will even make it on the ballet, never mind get passed.
