Countin on the anti-gay vote
Via Atrios we have this article on Tom Delay.
"Every now and then, an issue that is central to who you are and what your world view is comes along."
Americans "have been tolerant of homosexuality for years, but now it's being stuffed down their throats and they don't like it," DeLay said. "They know it will undermine the very foundation of this society, will undermine our understanding of what families are. Polls tell us that over 70 percent of Americans believe that a marriage is between a man and a woman, no matter what you call it."
He said that a "very telling difference" between the Democratic and Republican parties is that the former "is becoming the party of gay marriages" while the latter "is becoming the party of traditional values I think it's going to carry the day in the upcoming elections."
I won't bother fixing the errors here, rather I'd just like to point out that I hope they let DeLay do a lot of campaigning for Bush. I know that there is an anti-gay backlash occurring right now - and it's not unexpected. I also know, however, that there's a very real possibility that the GOP will over play the 'gay' card and turn people off from their message. Yes, people are squirrelly about gay 'Marriage', but not so much about gays in general. If this election becomes a referendum on gay people, I think the Democrats will fair pretty well. Remember 1992?
Comments:Yet a militant leader of the homosexual rights movement could rise at that convention and exult: "Bill Clinton and Al Gore represent the most pro-lesbian and pro-gay ticket in history." And so they do...
...My friends, this election is about much more than who gets what. It is about who we are. It is about what we believe. It is about what we stand for as Americans. There is a religious war going on in our country for the soul of America. It is a cultural war, as critical to the kind of nation we will one day be as was the Cold War itself. And in that struggle for the soul of America, Clinton & Clinton are on the other side, and George Bush is on our side. And so, we have to come home, and stand beside him."
