Review: Another Gay movie

I was looking forward to seeing ‘Another Gay Movie’, which billed itself as a gay ‘American Pie’, and indeed the plot of the movie tracks closely to AP, and has a handful of subtle, and not-so subtle jabs and moments of homage to it’s hetero counterpoint.

Alas, the similarities end there. AP, which delving from time to time into low brow humor, there was always a higher message which lifted the movie up. AGM lacks this higher level, and de-evolves into a collection of sexual misadventures of the four main characters.

Don’t get me wrong, there are a few chuckles in the movie (though, the trailer contains a good percentage of them), too often the movie takes a joke, and brings it to an unfunny extreme. It was amusing when one of the characters, on a gay chat, says he’s into everything from vanilla to Belgian chocolate. Seeing the result of it, was not quite so funny (If you, like me, don’t know what it means – it’s just about as gross as you can imagine).

The gay cameos were all but useless, with the exception of Scott Thompson and John Epperson, who did an amusing job as a traditional minded mom with a good dash of Joan Crawford. I was hoping for a movie that poked fun at the trials and tribulations of gay youth. While AGM makes the attempt, it does so only as a vehicle for sex jokes which really don’t offer anything beyond the obvious.

If you don’t see it at the local AMC, that’s because there’s a lot of graphic sex in the movie, some of which works, some of which is just because (I guess once the realized they weren’t going to get anything less than an NC-17 rating anyway, why bother with restraint).

Too bad, because a gay AP could have been a fun film.
