What a difference

In 1996, prior to the Oklahoma bombings, then president Bill Clinton urged the republican controlled congress to pass an anti-terrorism bill which allowed for expanded wire taps. Not warrantless taps, but taps specific to people not numbers.

The GOP congress said no.

The Republicans also dropped the additional wire-tap authority the Clinton administration wanted. U.S. Attorney general Janet Reno had asked for "multi-point" tapping of suspected terrorists, who may be using advanced technology to outpace authorities.

Now, ten years later - with a Republican President in power, there seems to be no limits on the power the GOP congress is willing to give. And, anyone who doesn’t agree with an unchecked executive, is weak on terror.

This article proves two things:

1. Clinton was indeed taking the terrorism problem seriously, it was the GOP who were not.

2. It seems the GOP was weak on terror, before it became a political gain for them.
