Straights are Superior

Articles like this really show the Republican’s intellectually dishonest stance on gay marriage. It starts off with large grandiose statements about ideals, then bends like a silly straw trying to point out how any deviations from the ideals only apply to gay couples.

Here’s the flow of the article:

  • Not all couplings are equal, and states should recognize this.
  • Straight couples are better than gay couples, because straight couples can have kids.
  • Britney Spears second marriage is better than her first, because it lasted longer and created kids. (Apparently, though, he first marriage – bad as it is, is better than gay relationships which last ten years and have children - Henry)
  • Families with kids are better for society than childless couples
  • But, infertile couples should still be able to get married, even though they are just as unlikely to have kids as gay couples. Because miracles happen
  • Did I mention gay couples can’t have kids?
  • Sure, gays can adopts or have kids via technological means, but it’s not the same. And we have the motherless / fatherless child problem.
  • When straight couples have sex, they’re fulfilling a greater role. Gay sex is just sex.
  • Therefore, gay couples do not deserve public recognition.

When the GOP truly start to treat straight single parent families, or childless families, with the same vitriol and disdain that they save for gay families, then they can at leats claim they’re being honest.

Usually, in a discussion of same-sex marriage, when somebody tells me that gay couples can't have kids, I usually respond, "Can a virgin?"

Considering the almost invariable religious beliefs of the opposition, it usually at least causes them to stutter and stumble for a few seconds.
