Personal Belief and Law

There’s a bit of a meme going about some conservative sites that express confusion over how Obama can be against same-sex marriage, yet against amending the constitution to prevent same sex marriage. (For fun extra credit, visit the comments where they call Obama ‘Mr. Messiah’).

Yet this is not, really, a difficult position to hold. Now, I can’t read Obama’s mind so this is pure speculation on my part, but it’s not a reach to think that Obama’s opposition to Same-Sex marriage is a personal belief and that he believes, in a free society, that just because he has a personal belief doesn’t mean that it should become the law of the land.

Which, honestly, more people of faith should adopt as a position.

Personally, I am mildly anti-abortion. I believe abortion is too readily a after-thought solution to poor safe-sex practices. That said, I have no need to see the abortion laws change to reflect my personal view and, more importantly, I oppose such a thing. Why? Because I don’t think it’s up to the government to make that decision for a woman. I believe it’s between her, her doctor, and her god if she has one.

Is it that hard to grasp?

Well, when you're used to using the government as a tool to enforce your morality on the rest of the nation, it's hard to imagine there are people who don't.

That said, if it's so confusing to them, why not ask McCain to explain it since he holds a similar position?
