All of the Above?

Steve Benen asks a good question:

But I have to ask: isn't it incumbent on John McCain to at least pretend to "suspend" his campaign again?

Now, one might argue that since the mean Democrats put politics in front of the country, by calling McCains sad attempt at grandstanding what it was – a sad attempt at grandstanding -, that it would be silly of him to suspend his campaign again.

But, foolish young one, you forget: McCain puts country first. He is willing to take political hits, if it is in the best interest of the country! So, it can’t be that.

Which leads to 2 other possibilities as to why McCain is off to Iowa, rather than back to ‘Warshington’ to fix things:

1. McCain realized his presence only hurt the process and, in putting country first, that means putting himself away from the process. OR

2. The ‘country first’ meme is less a patriotic characteristic of McCain and more a sad attempt to paint others as unpatriotic simply because they don’t do what McCain says they should.
